Security Measure for Your Home

Certain security measures should be taken on your home for making sure that it is safe. Most people put into action some form of security measure at night when going to sleep however they should be carried out all times of the day. If you think logically the majority of us work through the day, the perfect time for burglars to work too. A time in which they can work undisturbed and flee with your goods.  Most burglaries take place during daylight hours and peak at around 11am, for this reason it is essential to take the same precautions before you leave for work as the ones you take before going to bed.  So what exactly are these precautions?

Doors:
The most obvious security measure to take before leaving your home or going to bed is to lock your doors. If these aren’t secure then neither is your home. It is estimated that around two thirds of burglars enter a property through an open door, don’t let your home be one of these.  To maximise the security of your doors they should be fitted with an automated deadlock or a mortise deadlock to form a strong barrier difficult to break through.  The hinges and frames of your doors should be secure and the door itself should be strong. Finally for added security your door should be fitted with either a bar and chain, peephole or laminate panel in which you can see who is behind your door before answering it.

Windows:
Like doors, windows offer burglars a convenient way into your home if they are not managed correctly.  One third of intruders enter a home through an unlocked window so if you have one bigger than a human head take the following precautions. Windows should be fitted with secure quality locks that can hopefully be seen from the outside.  This will show that you are security aware and should hopefully deter a thief. Like your doors your window frames and the window itself should be strong and secure.  Your key should never be visible through the window.

Lighting:
If you’re not home particularly when it’s dark outside your home should look occupied.  Now many of us worry about the cost of leaving lights on however you can light your home without spending too much.  The best way to do this is to use an automatic timer switch that will manually turn on lights, radios and televisions and then turn them off whilst you’re out. Low wattage security lighting can also be placed in dark or hidden entrances giving the illusion that somebody is home.

Secret Access Points:
You may have a secret access point in your home that you yourself only know about. Many people have one of these in fear that they may lose their keys or lock themselves out.  It could be anything from a window with a lock that is easily pushed open, a drainpipe that leads to an open window or a key hidden under a plant pot.  Remember burglars know all the tricks in the book so avoid these secret entrances as they may just end up being the entrance for a thief.
